Writing a Mission Statement

A mission statement embodies the need for the members of a congregation to be aligned in a common purpose and articulate about why the congregation must exist. A mission statement should cry out for action. The verbs should be action verbs. It should look to the future and reach outward. A mission statement should be short so that it can be remembered, even by a first time visitor. A mission statement should be the beginning of the conversation, not the end. It should support a rallying cry for action that leads to a clear vision of where we will be and be going in five years.

 Examples:

Seek truth, share strength, promote understanding, develop wisdom, decry division, embrace diversity and open minds.

Open minds, commit hearts, create community

 Knowledge, community, growth
